The photo on the left is a hemmed sleeve with all the excess fabric folded up. Years later, I decided to take a chance on this, my very favorite jacket and hem the sleeves to a proper length. First, I practiced on a similar jacket that I care less about. I even cut off the excess to make a proper flat hem. I think for the first time, I ended up with the length I wanted!
I think part of the problem is getting used to the feel of shorter sleeves. When I move my arm and my wrist shows, I automatically think, "The sleeve is too short!" I think, thought, that the wrist is supposed to show when a jacket sleeve is hemmed to current conventions. At any rate, the jacket is easier to wear with the shorter sleeve because I don't have to push the fabric out of the way anytime I need to use my full hand.
