This picture was taken after I packed the bag for a week of cat sitting. In it are twin sheets, a small fleece blanket, a hair dryer, a curling iron, hair spray, a round brush, a small bottle of shine spray, a small bottle of styling cream, a toiletry bag, and maybe some other things, too. I think I stuffed too much into this bag, but it held up, even if it didn't quite shrink back to its original shape.
Once at a Bible study, we talked about how awful it was that Nicodemus, a teacher of the law, had to come ask Jesus basic questions, and horror of horrors, he came at night! Jesus himself scolded Nicodemus for not understanding what Jesus said, so I won't complain about mentioning how sad it is that the teachers lacked understanding. But, it irks me that it is considered acceptable to rail on Nicodemus for coming at night, the common explanation being that he was trying to hide from the other Pharisees. As usual, in this conversation, the outrage was less that a teacher didn't understand things he should have, but that in coming to find out those things, he was "sneaky."
Well, I had had enough. Sure, the man had faults. Who am I to disagree with God over that? But, we all have faults and God still considers us worthy of redemption. While the others were condemning Nicodemus as a coward, I was thinking about how brave he was to risk social ostracization, loss of status, and possible loss of career and income in order to find out more from this person whom the rulers wanted to get rid of. How many of us are willing to speak up when we see a co-worker doing something wrong? If we aren't willing to do that, how can we condemn someone else when even more was at stake for him? With all these thoughts bubbling in my head, but not quite coherent, I burst out with, "At least he was asking!"
The topic petered out after that.
The next week I came in wearing this "Vote Nic" tank that I had made. Someone told me she was glad I had spoken up and another approved of my shirt. No other comment was made.
That's the story of the "Vote Nic" tank-turned-bag.
